Alloderm Graft for Nose Surgery

Are you looking for a new and safe material for your rhinoplasty?

In the plastic surgery market, there are a number of implants and material for rhinoplasty. For individuals who don’t work in plastic surgery industry, it is difficult to choose the right materials. Today, we would like to share information for materials which have fewer complications and are safe. We would like to introduce a material call Allograft dermis (alloderm; human derived tissue). Allograft dermis is a transplantation of the dermis cells from a human to the recipient. This is not a new procedure, as it has existed for over 25 years.

The dermis is an underlying part of the human skin. When it comes to the type of graft to use, it depends on which area of the nose is being reconstructed. This also varies between the doctor and the patient’s preferences. We use proven graft materials, such as conchal ear cartilage for tip grafts and straight silastic grafts when doing a nasal bridge. For large volume augmentations, we use rib cartilage grafts. The dermis is used in areas to give it a nice, long-term improvement.

Here are some advantages of Alloderm:

  • Everyone has a chance, through allograft dermis, to get elastic fibers in the grafted dermis and have them successfully implanted in their nose with no hindrance.
  • You will have the nose type that you desire.
  • Some patients do not want an autograft; In this case, having allograft dermis is a good option.

Then, when should especially artificial dermis (alloderm) be used?

We as human are prone to mechanically inflicted injuries. When this happens on the nose, it might result in indentations, bumps and internal injuries which might result in breathing problems. Also, congenital anomalies are another common root of nose problems. These are conditions that originate from improper embryo development. They include nasal dermoid cysts which require open rhinoplasty to fix, paranasal sinuses, and gliomas. Most of these cause inflammation of the nasal cavity leading to deformation of the nose bones or cartilage.

Allograft dermis for rhinoplasty is suitable for fixing those who are suffering from internal nose damage from accidents or the congenital diseases. By doing this, the patient will be free from structural problems which have been causing chronic congestion and difficulty with their breathing.

Allograft dermis is recommended in these situations:

  1. Autograft; this is using another section of the skin of the patient to meet the grafting needs. When this is not safe, allograft dermis comes to the rescue.
  2. Human tissue culture: this involves the growing of a thin epidermis by using the patient’s skin through a clinical culture procedure.
  3. Xenograft: this is the use of animal skin, usually a pig. Some people are not open to this, so, allograft dermis becomes the best option.
  4. 4. Tissue engineering: this is the artificial growth of epidermis. This can be quite costly to do and allograft dermis is a better and more affordable option.
  5. 5. Usage of silicon grafts: not many people like this option; as a result, allograft dermis will be recommended.
